History of the Irish in Milord, PA

The recorded Irish influence in Milford began in the mid 1800’s with the opening of the Silver watch case factory in June 1864. The founder of this factory was Desire Bournique who grew the business until it required 55 men and boys to produce 400 watch cases per week. Many of these craftsmen were Irish and Catholic.  Mr. Bournique was also Catholic and an immigrant from France.

The first Catholic church built in Milford was a wooden structure whose cornerstone was laid on May 15th, 1877 on the corner lot of James and 8th Street.  This church was named after St Patrick and was supported by the local immigrant parishioners, even after the watch factory closed when Mr. Bournique died in the fall of 1884.

The legacy and culture of our immigrant forbears whispers to us even today such as when you see the symbol of the Rainbow, a common sight in their beloved homeland. Or in the stories of the leprechauns that are fairies of a diminutive size, who always carry a purse containing a shilling and place a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.

Guinness was always a common porter in Ireland, brewed beginning in the 1770’s in Dublin, Ireland.  Saint Patrick's Day, or the Feast of Saint Patrick (Irish: Lá Fhéile Pádraig), is a religious and cultural holiday held on 17 March, the traditional death date of Saint Patrick (c. 385 – c. 461), the foremost patron saint of Ireland.  Celebrations generally involve public parades and festivals, céilithe, and the wearing of green attire or shamrocks.  Historically, the Lenten restrictions on fasting and drinking alcohol were lifted for that day, which encouraged the holiday's tradition of some revelry.

We continue to honor our Irish heritage on St Patrick’s Day to celebrate Ireland’s patron saint and our Irish Ancestry.

2026 Parade

Planning for the 2026 parade began immediately after the conclusion of the 2025 parade.  Due to the success of the first Six Months to St. Patrick’s Day fundraiser it was decided to host a similar fundraiser this time at the Dimmick Inn.  The tradition of announcing the new Grand Marshalls continued where Larry and Teresa O’Leary were selected as Grand Marshalls.

2025 Parade

Not to sit idle on the success of the 2024 parade, Jenny and Joe started to plan for the second parade almost immediately upon conclusion of the first parade.  It was realized that additional funding was required to enhance the beauty of the parade.  A Six Months to St Patrick’s Day fundraiser dinner was organized and held at the Tom Quick Inn where the 2025 Grand Marshalls were announced.  Brian and Bernadette O’Donnell were selected as the 2025 Grand Marshall’s.

The 2025 parade was held and under the umbrella of the Pike County Chamber of Commerce.  Due to the success of the 2024 parade, the 2025 parade ballooned to over 100 marching units to include the same two pipe bands among other local bands including the Wallenpaupack High School Marching Band.  The parade consisted of marchers on foot, marchers with floats and all types of vehicles to include one float that decided to “go around again”.  The parade route was the same as 2024, Ann St Park on Fifth St to W Harford St to Broad St to High St, ending at St. Patrick’s Church.

The 2025 parade due to it’s size cost approximately twice as much as the first parade and was supported by generous donations from the community including individuals and commercial business along with entry fees and profits from the first dinner fundraiser.  While the size of the parade marchers was significant the parade organizers were astounded again by the community turnout which was estimated by local media to be over 5,000 people. It was another amazing and successful parade.

2024 Parade

The 2024 St. Patrick’s Day parade was the first such parade held in Milford.  In 2023, Jenny Gagnon a local realtor at Chant Realty approached Joseph Dooley, Milford Borough Council President, with the idea for a parade to recognize Irish ancestry.  They immediately realized the support and interest in such a parade and began preparations with a community of local volunteers.  Significant contributions to support the parade were obtained from Chant Realty and Milford Hospitality among contributions from local community members and small entry fees charged to for profit entities who wanted to participate in the parade.  The parade was initially organized under the auspices of the local Knights of Columbus Council, #13935, St. Joseph and St. Patrick churches.

The first Grand Marshall’s of the parade were Ken and Pat Corocran, members of St. Patrick’s church.
